What happens if a payment fails
A declined card doesn't mean your account closes. There's a grace period, then a freeze that keeps all your data, and one step that brings everything back.
Your card expired, or the bank declined the charge and you didn't know — does your account close and your team's work vanish? No. There's a wide distance between a failed payment and anything final, and every stage has its own window and its own notice.
The stages, in order
- Payment fails, and a 7-day grace period starts. Your account works in full, your team creates and edits as usual, and one clear notice appears on the “Subscription & Billing” page with a button to update your card.
- The grace period ends and the account freezes. Reading continues: every project, task, file, and conversation stays visible and searchable. What stops is creating and editing.
- After 7 frozen days, the subscription is cancelled. The door stays open to come back by registering a new card.
Note: Repeated failed payment attempts neither extend nor shorten the window. The clock starts at the first failure and its length is fixed.
How to fix it
- Click your profile photo in the “Navbar”.
- Pick “Subscription & Billing”.
- You'll find the notice at the top of the page with a button to settle the invoice or update your card.
- Complete the payment, and your account returns to full working order immediately.
What's available while past due or frozen
- Upgrades and cycle switches: not available until the overdue invoice is settled. An upgrade doesn't reconcile the amount you owe, so there's no sense in paying the bigger number and staying frozen over the smaller one.
- Downgrades: allowed, deliberately. A payment most often fails because the price is too heavy, so the cheaper plan is the real answer — blocking it would turn a downgrade into a cancellation.
- Your data: complete and in place at every stage. Nothing is deleted because of a failed payment.
Tip: The fastest way to avoid all of this: update your card before it expires, from the “Subscription & Billing” page or through the customer portal via “Manage Subscription”.
The result? An expired card is a one-minute problem, not an event that threatens your team's work.
